The Red Maple grows in wet forests and swampy area. New leaves are bright red in color. Blooms appear December through January.

Cypress "knees"
Cypress Root "Knees"

The Bald Cypress is a conifer that gets its' name because it looses all needles during the winter dry season. So, they appear "bald". Cypress root systems are distinct. Since the terrain is usually wet, they form "knees" that rise above the water. This way, the roots get air and do not die. You can actually tell how high the water depth has been by the height of the cypress roots.

The Leather Fern is Florida's largest fern. It grows huge and happy in the wet soil of the swamp.
